{"id":1283,"date":"2014-10-20T14:52:11","date_gmt":"2014-10-20T19:52:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/2015.penguicon.org\/?p=1283"},"modified":"2014-10-20T14:57:42","modified_gmt":"2014-10-20T19:57:42","slug":"givingback","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/2015.penguicon.org\/?p=1283","title":{"rendered":"Want to give back to those in need?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our Chair, Nuri, talked to <strong>Jen Owen<\/strong> at our Guest of Honor organization <a href=\"http:\/\/enablingthefuture.org\/\"><strong><em>E-Nable the Future<\/em><\/strong><\/a> about their recent <a href=\"http:\/\/enablingthefuture.org\/prosthetists-meet-3d-printers-press-release\/\">conference<\/a> at Johns Hopkins (<a href=\"http:\/\/enablingthefuture.org\/2014\/10\/01\/with-love-from-e-nable\/\">check out this blog by Jen<\/a>\u00a0about the experience), and here is what she had to say:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8220;The event at Hopkins was AMAZING &#8211; we had over 400 people there. We ended up making about 125 hands between the family workshops and the medical pro workshops! We sent at least 25 kids home with new hands that they had made themselves with their families. It was AMAZING.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Check out their <a href=\"http:\/\/enablingthefuture.org\/e-nable-prosthetists-meet-printers-event-album\/\">photo gallery<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>This year, we have an opportunity (if you would like) to help <em>directly<\/em> in the same way &#8211; to gather funds to pay for <strong>printing of hands<\/strong> remotely, or to have Penguicon attendees <strong>print some themselves<\/strong>\u00a0to donate. With E-Nable&#8217;s help, we could have an event during Penguicon where <em>we assemble those same hands we have funded, <\/em>in various sizes and colors. \u00a0If possible, they would try to find some local families in need to come take one home!<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/2015.penguicon.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/medworkshop-15.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1286\" src=\"https:\/\/2015.penguicon.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/medworkshop-15-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"medworkshop-15\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" data-wp-pid=\"1286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/2015.penguicon.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/medworkshop-15-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/2015.penguicon.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/medworkshop-15-800x532.jpg 800w, https:\/\/2015.penguicon.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/medworkshop-15.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>What do you think?<\/strong> Each kit costs about <strong>$40<\/strong> (including about $10 for future hand creation)\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0hands not used locally would go to other areas in need.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Would you consider contributing<\/strong> if you had the chance to see a prosthetic\u00a0hand created with your dollars, and (perhaps) see it given out directly to a local family in need? Would you gather your Penguicon peeps to chip in together?
