They just might change the world.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KcPjwq9-sDc\">e-Nable&#8217;s 2014 Year in Review<br \/>\n<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BBCleaRQAlc\">Creating\u00a0&#8220;Super hero hands&#8221; with 6 families<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">e-Nabling the Future hosted\u00a0their first\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/enablingthefuture.org\/prosthetists-meet-3d-printers-press-release\/\">conference<\/a>\u00a0at\u00a0<strong>John Hopkins Hospital<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0<strong>September 28, 2014<\/strong>.\u00a0There, they unveiled the\u00a0e-Nable 2.0 hand, the worlds first\u00a0<em>crowd-sourced, crowd developed prosthetic<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"manero\"><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\">\n<hr style=\"color: #fff;\" \/>\n<p><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"><span style=\"line-height: 13px;\">Albert Manero<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/2015.penguicon.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Manero_arm-e1427350623117.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2027 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/2015.penguicon.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Manero_arm-e1427350623117.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"212\" height=\"278\" data-wp-pid=\"2027\" \/><\/a>Our Guest of Honor,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/profile\/view?id=314832153&amp;authType=name&amp;authToken=xcBG&amp;trk=mirror-profile-memberlist-name\">Albert Manero<\/a><\/strong>, signed up to be a volunteer with e-Nabling the Future and was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AcLh-aSUdx0&amp;feature=em-uploademail\">quickly matched up with a six-year old boy in his local area<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">He gathered a team of friends and printed a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mae.ucf.edu\/tag\/albert-manero\/\">myoelectric arm<\/a>\u00a0that runs off of servos and batteries that are actuated by muscle energy \u2013\u00a0<em>the child flexes his bicep to squeeze the arm.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Albert and his team are excited to show the Penguicon community examples of the prosthetics they are working on that react to muscle movement for control.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Albert is currently a Fulbright Scholar at University of Central Florida where he is pursuing his Doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">UPDATE: Albert and Alex, the boy pictured above, recently met Robert Downey Jr., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oEx5lmbCKtY\">who showed off his own bionic arm!<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\">\n<hr style=\"color: #fff;\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/2015.penguicon.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/f5219884_web-e1422334743128.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1301 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/2015.penguicon.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/f5219884_web-e1422334743128.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" height=\"263\" data-wp-pid=\"1301\" \/><\/a><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"><span style=\"line-height: 13px;\">Charlie Jane Anders<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Our Guest of Honor,<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.io9.com\">io9<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0Editor-in-Chief\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/charliejane.com\/\">Charlie Jane Anders<\/a>,<\/strong> is hard at work on a fantasy novel with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tor.com\/\">Tor.com<\/a>, who have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tor.com\/bios\/authors\/charlie-jane-anders\">picked her up for two novels<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Her novelette <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tor.com\/stories\/2011\/06\/six-months-three-days\"><em>Six Months, Three Days<\/em><\/a> won the <strong>2012 Hugo<\/strong>, and her novel <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Choir-Boy-Charlie-Anders\/dp\/1932360816\"><em>Choir Boy<\/em><\/a> won a <strong>Lambda Literary Award<\/strong>, both receiving other big nominations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">She organizes the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.writerswithdrinks.com\/\">Writers With Drinks<\/a> reading series in San Francisco (which sounds like a convention without all that pesky conventioning).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">She co-edited the anthology <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Shes-Such-Geek-Science-Technology\/dp\/1580051901\">She\u2019s Such a Geek<\/a><\/em>\u00a0with Annalee Newitz and published an indy magazine called <em>other<\/em>. She\u2019s also contributed to Mother Jones, the Wall Street Journal, the San Francisco Chronicle, Strange Horizons, and many other publications.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">You can find more of her work in the <em>McSweeney\u2019s Joke Book of Book Jokes<\/em>, <em>Best Science Fiction Of The Year 2009<\/em>, <em>Sex for America<\/em>, and other anthologies. She seeks to integrate all of Gawker&#8217;s science, gadget, and technology blogs under the Gizmodo umbrella, combining <a href=\"http:\/\/annaleenewitz.kinja.com\/welcome-to-the-future-initiative-1679760525\">&#8220;speculative wonder with skepticism and hard truths.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">She&#8217;s also the author of<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Scatter-Adapt-Remember-Survive-Extinction\/dp\/0307949427\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1423167148&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=Scatter%2C+Adapt+and+Remember%3A+How+Humans+Will+Survive+a+Mass+Extinction\"><em> Scatter, Adapt and Remember: How Humans Will Survive a Mass Extinction<\/em><\/a>, nominated for a 2013 LA Times book prize.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Her articles have been published in\u00a0<i>The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Wired, The Smithsonian Magazine, The Washington Post, 2600, New Scientist, Technology Review, Popular Science, Discover<\/i> and the\u00a0<i>San Francisco Bay Guardian<\/i>.
