Bring your laptop along to get the most from hands-on activities in this session.

Whether you are into circuitry, soda, 3d printing, DIY furniture or software, there is an open source community for you. This panel answers questions like “How do I find them? What can I do to introduce myself? How can I help?”
  • MariaDB: The New MySQL in your LAMP Stack- with Colin Charles (MariaDB) Come to understand what MariaDB is all about, the new features it has compared to MySQL, and why you want to use it. Learn about security, user management, multi-source replication, keeping your slaves as fast as your master, and a lot more. Check out our other posts coming soon for more great people coming to Penguicon this year!  We will be maintaining a full list on our This Year at Penguicon page.

Tom Callaway – Red Hat Linux

tom callawayTom Callaway has been at Red Hat since early 2001. Currently, he works on the Open Source and Standards team, handling community outreach for the Gluster Filesystem, University Outreach, 3D printing support, and Fedora special projects.

He is a founding member of the Fedora community, has served several terms on the Fedora Board and Fedora Engineering Steering Committee, and maintains more than 300 Fedora software packages.

He is also the co-author of “Raspberry Pi Hacks” (O’Reilly, 2013). In his limited spare time, he enjoys science fiction, pinball, gaming, and geocaching.

Sarah Elkins and Phil Salkie – LN2 Ice Cream

saraandphilPhil Salkie and Sarah Elkins enjoy geekery in a variety of flavors, like the liquid nitrogen ice cream they serve at Penguicon.

Phil is an industrial automation engineer, and Sarah is a software configuration manager. They’ve enjoyed coming from the East Coast to Penguicon since 2007, giving presentations, dancing, and making friends.

Thanks to co-conspirator Jen Hamilton, all the other LN2 helpers, and appreciative ice cream fans — it wouldn’t be nearly as much fun without you.

Tom Smith – Music

Tom SmithThere’s every other singer out there… and then there’s Tom Smith. Tom is NOT your ordinary comedy musician.

With the lyrical complexity of Ashman and Sondheim, the vocal fireworks of Meat Loaf, the comedic timing of Robin Williams, and the dynamic physique of the Skipper from Gilligan’s Island, the only thing he won’t do is be boring.

Tyson Gersh – Michigan Urban Farming Initiative

TysonTyson Gersh is a senior at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, studying Psychology. An active member of the Michigan community, Tyson is the Co-founder & President of the Michigan Urban Farming Initiative (MUFI) – 100% volunteer-run 501 (c)(3) non-profit based in Detroit’s North End Community that uses urban agriculture as a platform to promote education, sustainability, and community empowerment.

Laying at the intersection of social justice and social innovation, MUFI’s on-the-ground efforts are largely based in community and economic development.

bookmark_borderGuest of Honor: Aral Balkan

We are very excited announce Aral Balkan, founder and lead designer of Ind.ie, as our Guest of Honor! Aral thinks we are paying too much for our free software, saying, “Free is a lie because it is a concealed barter,” and “The cost of free is our human rights.”

Along with creating a manifesto for experience-based, privacy respecting open source design, the company is working on a free open source social network client called Heartbeat, with the idea that it will be the core of a peer-to-peer consumer platform that lets you share what you want without becoming a monetized statistic of the “free” business model.

Aral says, “Traditional free and open source organizations are unequipped to provide the solutions we need in the post-Snowden world.”

Aral will be a keynote speaker on one evening during Penguicon; security specialist and Guest of Honor Emeritus Bruce Schneier will deliver a keynote speech on the other evening.

bookmark_borderListen to IT in the D tonight to hear about Penguicon!

IT in the D is a podcast where the presenters share a few beers with their guests and talk about the topic of the day which, today, includes us!  They’re also known for their blog series, “Don’t Be That Guy“, and their Pink Slip Party bar events.

Your Chair, Nuri Gocay, and your Asst. Chair, Scott Kennedy (me!) will be on the air live – the show goes from 9p to 11p tonight (February 9th). We’ll be talking about the the very latest confirmed updates to Penguicon 2015, which is getting better and better every week!

They have a call-in number (see their page for details) for people to ask questions or share their experiences – we’d love for you to participate!

If you miss us live, we’ll be in their archives as well.

bookmark_borderAnnouncing our latest Guest of Honor, Annalee Newitz!

We’re excited to announce that Annalee Newitz will be joining us for Penguicon 2015!

Along with being the new Editor-in-Chief for Gizmodo (responsible for aligning together Gawker Media’s tech, science, and gadget blogs), she’s written about how humanity might survive a mass extinction event, co-edited an anthology about women in tech, and is a former analyst for the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Check out This Year at Penguicon for more details about Annalee!

bookmark_borderMaker Market deadline approaching

Our Maker Market is only accepting submissions until the 1st of February! We have a ton of really great submissions, but if you or someone you know makes nerdy art, electronics, crafts, designs – send them our way to get a table during the convention.

Last year, we had well over 1,300 attendees. We have plans this year to help highlight our makers with a map and some advertising online and in the souvenir book.

We are looking for maximum diversity, and are not accepting tables this year from resale vendors (with the exception of a possible book vendor or certain electronics).

Please share this link with the crafters, comic artists, LED kit designers, and other makers in your life so we can have the best community of makers ever!

Check out our Maker Market info for more details, or send in your application, and we will get back to you after the deadline.

bookmark_borderRoom Party submission form

Happy New Year!  We hope that 2015 is fantastic for you – we are hard at work at making it great for Penguicon.

Along those lines, we’d like you to know that our hotel page now has the submission form available for room parties.  Please register for a room, and use the forms to let both our hotel liaison and our room party liaison know!

This year, our room parties will be on the top two floors of the hotel, which have a central stair case leading between the two.  We’re excited about what that will mean for the availability of our elevators during peak social time.

If you’d like to chat with the con staff, feel free to come to our party at ConFusion on Saturday night (January 17th) at their hotel in Dearborn, MI.  You’re also welcome to join us for our ConCom meeting at 1pm Sunday at ConFusion – you need not get a ConFusion membership to come to the meeting.

bookmark_borderCharlie Jane Anders is a Guest of Honor!

We’re very excited to announce that io9 Managing Editor Charlie Jane Anders is coming to Penguicon as a Guest of Honor! She’s hard at work on a fantasy novel with Tor.com, who have picked her up for two novels.

Her novelette Six Months, Three Days won the 2012 Hugo, and her novel Choir Boy won a Lambda Literary Award, both receiving other big nominations.

She organizes the Writers With Drinks reading series in San Francisco (which sounds like a convention without all that pesky conventioning).

She co-edited the anthology She’s Such a Geek with Annalee Newitz and published an indy magazine called other. She’s also contributed to Mother Jones, the Wall Street Journal, the San Francisco Chronicle, Strange Horizons, and many other publications.

You can find more of her work in the McSweeney’s Joke Book of Book Jokes, Best Science Fiction Of The Year 2009, Sex for America, and other anthologies.
